Northumberland County Back Roads | Photo Gallery
This covered bridge acts as a gateway to a tour of back roads in little-known Northumberland county in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The well-maintained, red covered bridge with bright yellow warning signs stand out against the rich greens of the spring foliage. The gravel track visible through the bridge portends the relaxed adventure as it winds away into the forested hills.
This stretch of gravel road is carved out of a hill that descends from right to left. I snapped this photo through the windshield as the hill that peaked about 25 feet in front of the hood and disappeared into the green forest ahead.
A momentarily steep, rutted gravel track through the forests of Northumberland County Pennsylvania. Lush, green foliage line both sides with steep hills descending from the left to right. A perfect example of a typical east coast US "shelf" road.
The road was a little bumpy as I climbed the gravel track. Just your typical Pennsylvania back road carved up a hill out of sheer rock and determination. Recent Field Notes
