Dog’s Day Out With Diva
For her birthday, my kid asked if we could do the Animal Rescue League of Berks County’s Dog’s Day Out program.
That’s how we met Diva.
The choice was strategic. Diva is a mellow sweetheart who wants to be the only pet in the house. That lowered the odds of us ending the afternoon at PetSmart buying another food bowl because somebody made a terrible, adorable decision.
We gave her an Adventure Adjacent kind of day: a walk through Nolde Forest, a ride in the FJ, a Dairy Queen pup cup, and a stuffed duck to take back to the shelter.
Mellow, happy, and perfectly content to spend the day with us, Diva made a pretty convincing case for the whole program.
Dog’s Day Out gives shelter dogs a break from kennel life and some time in the wider world. The ARL says those outings can reduce stress, help staff learn more about a dog outside the shelter, and give adoptable dogs a little more exposure.
Sometimes you borrow a dog for an afternoon and bring back a happier dog. Sometimes the dog reminds you that adventure doesn’t need to be complicated to matter.
Diva is still waiting for her person in Birdsboro. She’s a senior, she’d do best as the only pet in the home, and she has a documented weakness for stuffed toys and rolling around in the grass. Petfinder currently lists her adoption fee at $25, while the ARL’s Seniors for Seniors program offers free senior-pet adoptions to qualifying senior adopters.
If you’ve got room for a mellow sweetheart who deserves a kingdom of her own, go meet Diva.
